Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) refers to a group of conditions caused by plaque buildup in the arteries, leading to narrowed or blocked blood vessels. This buildup, known as atherosclerosis, restricts blood flow and can result in heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease.

ASCVD is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and includes conditions such as:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Cerebrovascular disease (stroke)
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

How Is ASCVD Diagnosed?

  • Cholesterol and lipid blood tests
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)
  • Echocardiogram or stress testing
  • Imaging tests like CT angiography or ultrasound
  • Medical history and risk factor assessment (e.g., diabetes, smoking, family history)

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Chest pain or pressure (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue with exertion
  • Numbness or weakness in arms or legs
  • Slow-healing sores on the feet or legs

Sudden dizziness, difficulty speaking, or vision problems (possible stroke symptoms)

How Is Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Treated?

Treatment focuses on slowing or reversing plaque buildup, improving blood flow, and preventing serious events like heart attacks and strokes.
