Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. Normally, cells grow, divide, and die in a controlled way. In cancer, this process breaks down, causing cells to divide uncontrollably and potentially invade nearby tissues or spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system.
There are many types of cancer, typically named based on where they begin (e.g., breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer). Each type behaves differently, but they all share the hallmark feature of abnormal cell behavior. Cancer is typically diagnosed through imaging scans, biopsies, and laboratory tests.
How Is Cancer Diagnosed?
Diagnosing cancer involves a combination of:
- Imaging tests (CT scans, MRIs, PET scans)
- Blood tests and biomarker analysis
- Biopsies (removing and examining tissue)
- Genetic testing to identify mutations
Common Cancer Symptoms Include:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
- Persistent pain
- Unusual lumps or swelling
- Changes in skin or moles
- Difficulty swallowing or persistent cough
- Blood in the stool or urine
How Is Cancer Treated?
Cancer treatment is highly individualized and may include a combination of surgery, radiation, oral medications, or infusion therapies depending on the cancer type, stage, and overall health.
Infusion Therapy for Cancer
Infusion Specialists can provide targeted intravenous (IV) therapies that can help control cancer growth, shrink tumors, and improve quality of life. Our outpatient center offers:
- Chemotherapy Infusions – Traditional drugs that kill fast-growing cancer cells
- Immunotherapy Infusions – Stimulate the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells
Other Cancer Treatment Approaches
- Surgery to remove localized tumors
- Radiation therapy to target cancer cells with high-energy rays
- Hormonal therapies for cancers like breast or prostate cancer
- Lifestyle adjustments to support immune function and recovery
