Gout

Gout is a painful form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. This condition leads to sudden, severe flare-ups of pain, redness, and swelling, often affecting the big toe, but it can also impact the ankles, knees, wrists, and other joints. Gout attacks can be debilitating, and without proper treatment, they may become more frequent and severe over time, leading to joint damage.

Gout is diagnosed using:

  • Blood tests to measure uric acid levels
  • Joint fluid analysis to detect urate crystals
  • Imaging studies (ultrasound or X-ray) to assess joint damage and crystal deposits

Common Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear suddenly and can be extremely painful, often occurring at night or early morning. Common signs include:

  • Intense joint pain, especially in the big toe, ankles, knees, or wrists
  • Redness, swelling, and warmth in affected joints
  • Limited joint mobility due to pain and stiffness
  • Recurring flare-ups, followed by symptom-free periods

Treatments

Effective treatment focuses on reducing pain, managing inflammation, and preventing future flare-ups.

Infusion Therapy for Severe Gout

For patients with chronic or treatment-resistant gout, IV infusion therapy with Pegloticase is a game-changing option. Pegloticase infusions help lower uric acid levels rapidly, dissolving crystal deposits and preventing further joint damage. Infusion therapy is especially beneficial for patients who do not respond to traditional medications.

Other Treatment Options

  • Medications – Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, colchicine), corticosteroids, and uric acid-lowering medications (allopurinol, febuxostat) help manage symptoms.
  • Dietary Changes – Avoiding purine-rich foods like red meat, alcohol, and seafood while staying well-hydrated can help reduce uric acid buildup.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments – Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and managing conditions like high blood pressure can help prevent gout attacks.
