What Is IVIG Therapy?

If you or a loved one has recently been prescribed IVIG therapy, you may be wondering what is IVIG therapy and why it is needed. This is one of the most common questions we hear from our patients in Idaho Falls and throughout Eastern Idaho.

IVIG stands for intravenous immunoglobulin. In simple terms, it is a treatment made up of antibodies that help support or regulate the immune system. These antibodies come from donated human plasma and are carefully processed for medical use. When given through an IV, they go directly into the bloodstream, where they can begin working right away.

For many people in our community, IVIG therapy becomes an important part of managing ongoing or complex health conditions.

What Is IVIG Made Of?

IVIG contains immunoglobulins, which are antibodies your body naturally produces to fight off infections. Some people do not make enough antibodies on their own. Others have immune systems that are overactive and mistakenly attack healthy tissue.

By infusing healthy antibodies into the bloodstream, IVIG therapy can either replace what the body is missing or help calm an immune system that is out of balance.

Why Is IVIG Therapy Prescribed?

Doctors recommend IVIG therapy for a variety of conditions. Some of the most common reasons include:

Immune deficiencies
Certain patients are unable to produce enough antibodies to protect themselves from infections. IVIG provides the immune support their bodies need.

Autoimmune disorders
In some autoimmune conditions, the immune system attacks healthy cells. IVIG can help regulate that response and reduce inflammation.

Neurological conditions
Some nerve and muscle disorders respond well to IVIG therapy, often improving strength, mobility, and overall function.

Your provider will carefully review your diagnosis, lab work, and medical history before recommending IVIG therapy to ensure it is the right fit for you.

What To Expect During IVIG Treatment

If you are preparing for your first infusion, knowing what is IVIG therapy and what to expect can help ease anxiety.

IVIG therapy is given through an IV in a relaxed clinical setting. When you arrive, a nurse will review your health information, check your vital signs, and start your IV line. Once the infusion begins, the medication is delivered slowly and at a controlled rate.

Most IVIG infusions take between 1 ½ to 4 hours, depending on your prescribed dose and how your body tolerates the treatment. Typically, you will come for 2 consecutive days to make your dose easier on your body to absorb and utilize.  Most patients require repeat infusions every 4 weeks as part of their ongoing care plan.

During the infusion, you can read, watch a show, listen to music, or simply rest. Our team monitors you throughout the entire process to ensure you remain comfortable and safe.

After Your Infusion

When your IVIG therapy is complete, you will usually be able to go home the same day. Many patients feel fine afterward, though mild side effects can occur.

Some people experience:

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches

  • Hot flashes or chills

These symptoms are typically temporary. Staying well hydrated is critical. Some find that resting for the remainder of the day can help. If anything feels unusual or severe, it is important to contact your provider right away.

Why IVIG Therapy Matters

For individuals with immune system disorders, IVIG therapy can make a meaningful difference. It may reduce the frequency of infections, limit flare-ups of autoimmune disease, and improve day-to-day functioning.

For patients in Idaho Falls and across Eastern Idaho, receiving IVIG therapy locally means less travel and more consistent access to care. Having an experienced infusion team nearby provides reassurance and ongoing support throughout treatment.
