Cimzia belongs to a classification of drugs known as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers.  TNF is a protein produced by the immune system and can be helpful in low amounts. It plays a role in several vital bodily functions, such as fat metabolism and clotting of blood cells when needed.

Certain conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s, however, can cause the overproduction of TNF, leading to excessive inflammation. Cimzia helps block this extra TNF that is present in the body before it can cause damage.
